Appel à candidatures – College Lectureship in History (Cambridge University)

Gonville and Caius College intends to appoint a College Lecturer in History with effect from 1 September 2015.  Applications are welcome from individuals with expertise in any field taught in the Cambridge Historical Tripos (see the website) and not currently covered by a member of the college’s teaching staff. American and Atlantic history (any period), medieval history (any area), early modern British history, and 20th-century European history (excluding Britain) would be particularly relevant.

The College has for many years enjoyed an exceptional reputation in History with a large number of Teaching Fellows.  About 36 undergraduates read the subject at any one time.  History at Caius benefits from the presence of scholars in contiguous fields such as Classics and Art History, a large complement of Research Fellows currently including several historians, and over 20 research students in History.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduates the equivalent of ten hours per week of supervisions conducted in pairs and to direct the studies of one or more of the year groups of the large community of history students at the College. The College also expects its College Lecturers to be research-active and their duties encompass research as well as teaching. Candidates should have a strong research record, including significant publications and plans for future research. The appointment will be for three years in the first instance, with the possibility of renewal for a further two years and thereafter reappointment to the retiring age. Re-appointment to the retiring age will be dependent upon satisfactory teaching and research. It is intended that the person appointed to the College Lectureship will be elected to a Fellowship.

The current annual stipend of a College Teaching Officer is on a scale of £34,233 to £43,325 if not resident in College and £31,145 to £40,237 if resident in College; the stipend is pensionable under the University Superannuation Scheme. Additional allowances for Teaching and Research Expenses, for books used in teaching, and for housing are described in the further particulars.

It is intended that the person appointed will take up the lectureship on 1 September 2015. Further particulars can be obtained from the College website . Completed applications should be sent to the Senior Tutor at Gonville and Caius College (senior.tutor@cai.cam.ac.uk) by 21 April 2015. Candidates are also asked to arrange for three supporting references to be sent to the same address, and by the same date. Interviews will take place on 2 and 3 June 2015.
